A FUN community event in Bude has been sharing a vital message to coastal residents and visitors to Cornwall.

Bude’s RNLI Lifeguard team have been out spreading a message of safety and survival in the water, as part of the national ‘Float to Live’ message.

The RNLI’s campaign is teaching the nation what to do if they get into trouble in the water, a message which has been shared with locals following the event held at Bude Sea Pool.

A spokesperson from Bude RNLI Lifeguards said: “What better place to spread an important message than the beautiful Bude Sea Pool?

“Bude RNLI volunteers and Water Safety Team were out chatting to locals and holidaymakers, sharing one simple piece of advice that could save a life: Float to Live.

“The weather is glorious, the sea is inviting, and Bude is buzzing with people making the most of our incredible coastline. We want everyone to enjoy it safely.”

According to the crew, nearly one in three people in the UK don’t know what to do if they find themselves in difficulty in the water, therefore the campaign is hoping to inform the masses.

The campaign tells those who unexpectedly get into trouble to tilt their head back with their ears submerged, relax and try to control their breathing, move their hands to help stay afloat, and once their breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety if possible.

“A huge thank you to everyone who joined in our group float and helped us spread the message,” the spokesperson continued. “It’s fantastic to see so many people getting involved—because knowing what to do could make all the difference.
