POLICE in Launceston have issued a warning following a spike in criminal damage in the area.

The local force has spoken out after it has seen a rise in reports regarding young people ‘trespassing in agricultural fields and causing criminal damage to water taps and livestock water systems.’

The incidents have sparked concern around the harm it could cause to animals, especially in the summer heat.

A spokesperson from Launceston Police said: “During the current hot weather, this behaviour can have a serious impact on the welfare of animals that rely on these water sources. Damage to water supplies can leave livestock without access to drinking water and creates significant costs for farmers, who must repair the damage and refill water containers.”

As a result of the reports, the force has reminded residents that entering private land without permission could constitute a criminal offence, and have asked parents to ensure they know the locations of their children and what they’re doing.

The spokesperson continued: “As the summer holidays begin, we ask parents and guardians to please make sure you know where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing. A simple conversation can help prevent incidents like this and protect local farms, animals, and the wider community.”

Residents have been urged to report incidents to allow the force to take action and prevent further damage.
