A FUNDRAISER launched to support a ‘generous’ man from Okehampton who was seriously injured after a road traffic collision has already passed £4,000.

Matt Retter was out jogging when he was hit by a car, leaving him seriously injured. The incident took place just a week after he got married to his wife, Sarah.

The money raised is intended to support Matt and his wife during an uncertain time with the fundraiser launched by Okehampton Round Table, a group that Mr Retter has played a part in volunteering with.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of numerous offences in connection with the collision, including causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident, driving while unfit through drugs and driving without insurance.

He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

The fundraiser, organised by Okehampton Round Table, stated: “Just one week after getting married, Matt and Sarah Retter's lives changed completely.

“On Thursday, September 3, Matt was out doing something he loves — running — when he was involved in a serious hit-and-run collision near Hatherleigh.

“Matt suffered life-changing injuries and now faces a long and uncertain journey of recovery and rehabilitation.

“As an electrician, his injuries also mean that he is currently unable to work. At what should have been the beginning of an exciting new chapter of married life together, Matt and Sarah are instead facing circumstances neither of them could ever have imagined.Matt has always been there for others.

“Anyone who knows Matt will know that he's a top bloke and one of those people who is always willing to get stuck in and help.

“Over the years, Matt has given his time to support the local carnival and tar barrels, and in 2013 he was part of a team that kayaked around the South West and helped raise more than £12,500 for charity.

“He's also been a great friend and supporter of Okehampton District Round Table.

“Matt has regularly given up his own time to help with our Santa Sleigh, bringing Santa to communities across the area and helping put smiles on the faces of hundreds of children and families at Christmas.

“He didn't do any of it for recognition or thanks. He did it because that's the sort of person Matt is.

“Now it's our turn to help him. The money raised will help them with the loss of income and everyday living expenses, as well as rehabilitation, specialist care, equipment, adaptations or anything else that may help Matt on the road ahead.

“Nobody yet knows exactly what Matt's recovery will look like or how long it will take.

We're asking our friends, families, supporters and the incredible communities around Hatherleigh, Okehampton and beyond to get behind them.

“It doesn't matter whether you can give £5, £10, £20 or more. Every donation adds up and every donation shows Matt and Sarah that there is a whole community standing behind them.”
